Wisconsin’s cranberry industry provides nearly 60 percent of the world’s supply of cranberries, and provides much more to the state of Wisconsin. In fact, the cranberry industry is the state’s largest fruit industry providing nearly $350 million annually to the state’s economy and supporting approximately 7,200 jobs.
Based on recent projections from cranberry industry experts, business leaders and marketers, the cranberry industry needs to produce an additional 110 million pounds, or 5,000 acres, of berries in the next 5-10 years to meet the increased global demand.
Such an expansion is an opportunity for Wisconsin’s cranberry industry to grow while significantly benefiting the state of Wisconsin’s economy.
For example, according to a 2008 economic study by University of Wisconsin economists, if Wisconsin’s cranberry industry were to add 1,000 acres of cranberry production, it would provide an additional $15 million to the state’s economy annually and help support more than 223 additional jobs. If 5,000 new acres were planted in Wisconsin, the state would gain 1,115 new jobs and see $75 million in income added annually.
Timing is key for Wisconsin to seize this growth opportunity as other states and regions are also are looking to expand their cranberry crop. With that in mind, WSCGA is working collaboratively with state regulators, cranberry handlers and marketing companies, community and business groups and its growers to make a concerted effort to bring the expansion and its economic benefits to the state to Wisconsin.
